![]() South Stack (Holy Island,Holyhead)
South Stack is a tiny islet just a stone's throw from the craggy coast outside of Holyhead. It is the site of one of Wales' most dramatic lighthouses. Sailors have feared the rocks around here for years and a request for a lighthouse dates back as far as 1665, but it wasn't until 1809 that the call was heeded, in order to protect the busy Dublin - Holyhead - Liverpool route. The coastline is dramatic - granite cliffs rise up nearly 200ft and the air is full of birds and birdcall. This is why most visitors come - the bird life is spectacular and all sorts of high tech gadgetry such as CCTV has been installed to get you in the thick of the action.
